Made by Andrew Tullson of Print n Play Productions, this map has been a delight, and worth every moment of the five weeks it took to wait for Andrew’s busy schedule to clear so he could make it.

I received a bunch of counters from him as well. As I make my own counters these days, I can say without hesitation that the counters he makes are first rate. You won’t be disappointed if you contract his services.

Making counters, making maps

I’ve already published an article on my counter making technique. I thought I would publish a brief description of how to make Panzerblitz style hex boards with the GIMP. I favor GIMP for reasons of cost: it is free.

The whole long Panzerblitz board is 8 inches by 22 inches, which makes for two 8 by 11 half board sections. Those 8 inch sections have 10 side to side hexagons on them, making the hexagon side to side distance 0.8 inches. Nice that the GIMP can work in inches. To begin you’ll need the hexgrid script, or plugin. It’s actually a script, so it needs to be installed in the scripts directory. As a working sheet, make a 8 inch by 11 inch sheet with 100 pixels per inch. If you want more pixels you’ll need to expand the pixel based measurements I’ll be providing.

Formulas are:

Hexagon length definitions

point to point distance = a
side to side distance = b
center to side = r
length of one side = s
vertical distance from lower side to point = h

Formulas:
internal angle = 120 degrees
b tan 30 = s
2s = a
2h = s
2r = b

Hex Grid Layout for Gimp: http://registry.gimp.org/node/15852. After downloading the file, put it here: ~/.gimp-2.<whatever>/scripts/

Filters -> Render -> Patterns -> Hex Grid

Please note that 10 PB hexes fit onto 8 inches of paper, hence b = 0.8″

Create a new piece of paper 8″ x 11″ 100 ppi.

Hex setup should be:

side
46 pixel side
23 pixel vertical offset
vertical hex orientation

Perfect is 7.97″ and 11.04″, but these offsets aren’t that visible on this scale. I’ve seen 7.99″ and 11.06″ used on PDFs on various PB sites.
